Wahpeton is a historic, thriving regional city serving as the county seat of Richland County, situated in the extreme southeast corner of North Dakota at the scenic confluence of the Bois de Sioux and Otter Tail rivers, which form the Red River of the North. Established in 1869, the city grew rapidly as a highly prosperous agricultural processing rail hub and educational center, home to the North Dakota State College of Science. Wahpeton famously honors its prairie ecology as the home of 'Chahinkapa Sue,' a massive, 40-foot-tall fiberglass monument of a catfish. Today, the city blends its rich midwestern manufacturing economy with scenic riverfront parks, exceptional collegiate sports, and a family-friendly community atmosphere.
