Wall, South Dakota

Window to the Badlands

About this city

Also known as: Window to the Badlands

Wall is a historic, world-famous prairie oasis town positioned flatly along the northern edge of the Badlands National Park wilderness in southwestern South Dakota. Established painstakingly in 1907 during the expansion of the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company railway, the town derived its unique name from the natural outer geologic wall of the eroded badlands formations nearby. Wall achieved mythic global cultural fame through a brilliant piece of historic roadside marketing, transforming a tiny bankrupt general store into one of the largest shopping hubs in the West.
