Best TimeSpring (April–May) and crisp autumn (September–October) deliver the finest trail conditions for world-class mountain biking. Hitting the singletracks between 6:30 AM and 9:00 AM is elite; early morning sun rays cut through the dense pine valleys and morning mist, providing cool mountain temperatures and scenic solitude.
Getting ThereThe primary access hub (Waterworks Trailhead) is located at 300 McCabe Ave. Drive north from Hot Springs on Central Ave, transition onto Park Ave (US-70 E), then turn left onto McCauley Rd. Follow signs onto McCabe Ave straight to its end to access a developed complimentary gravel parking loop with bike-wash bays.

Travel Tips

  • The Northwoods track grid operates highly technical, single-direction gravity singletracks. Riders and hikers must cross-reference daily rotation signs at the Waterworks Trailhead; proceeding against the designated flow triggers catastrophic high-speed head-on collisions.
  • Traversing the historical city water supply zone, environmental statutes strictly prohibit leaving designated trail gravel or wading in pristine reservoir spillways. Recreational drone flights are subject to a flat ban, backed by watershed security felony arrests.
  • Deep ravine topography kills mobile carrier connections on the outer singletrack sectors; pre-load offline digital topographic maps. MTB operators are strongly urged to utilize MIPS-certified full-face helmets and carry specialized trail chain-breakers.

Heads up
  • As a multi-use trail, mountain bikers flying around blind curves can cause close-call near collisions with unsuspecting pedestrian hikers.
  • The sheer layout complexity and endless trail forks can easily disorient first-timers; keeping a live digital topo map running is highly advised.
  • Cell coverage drops completely out in deeper valley hollows, which complicates communication if you suffer a bad crash or mechanical breakdown.
  • The interior singletracks feature no restrooms, rest benches, or trash cans once you leave the main parking lot, demanding wilderness self-reliance.
