Founded as a Spanish outpost called Fort Miro, the city was renamed in 1819 in honor of the steamship James Monroe, which revolutionized local river commerce. Monroe holds a legendary place in business history as the birthplace of Delta Air Lines, which originated here in the 1920s as a crop-dusting operation called Huff Daland Dusters to combat agricultural pests. Contemporary Monroe features a compelling blend of rich riverfront history, a booming sector for precision manufacturing and telecommunications corporate centers, and access to some of the state's most sweeping bayou wilderness refuges.
