Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 as the world's very first national monument and park, sits atop a massive active volcanic caldera in northwestern Wyoming. Spanning nearly 3,500 square miles, this world-renowned biosphere contains more than half of the entire planet's active geothermal features, characterized by explosive geysers, bubbling mud pots, and brilliant multicolored hot springs. The park's diverse high-altitude ecosystem also boasts vast pine forests, deep dramatic canyons, and the most abundant concentration of free-roaming large mammals in the lower 48 states.
